As I browsed through this wonderful bookstore located in the heart of downtown Knoxville I couldn't help but think what a valuable asset it would be to others who might like to open their own bookstore. The store has been around for about 12 years so they have experience. They're clearly successful with good staying power. The people I met on this day were awesome and I'm sure the rest of the staff is the same. Flossie one of the co-owners along with daughter Bunnie is an experienced bookstore owner having owned one previously. Especially if you're in the Smoky Mountains region, these would be good people to advise and mentor someone about bookstore ownership.
But there are some advantages here that can't be duplicated. Knoxville has a population of approximately 780,000 which means a strong, built-in customer base. On top of that, it is home to the large University of Tennessee. It is a 10 minute walk from campus to the bookstore and many from the university community frequent the store. They also enjoy tourist regulars who annually visit this region. For those of you who are regulars, you should definitely join the customer rewards program offered.
Union Avenue stocks all new books and one of my favorite things here are the numerous table displays. I think this REALLY makes for a great browsing experience. Of course, if you can't make it here in person consider purchasing a book online, something that helped carry the store through the pandemic. This indie offers a wide variety of sidelines including greeting cards, journals, candles, and much more too numerous to mention. But as book buyer Chelsea B. told me, the stickers are so hot they can't keep them in stock.
Like most of my visits, the people here are the best. Chelsea and Leo C., a bookseller, were welcoming, knowledgeable, and an absolute blast to meet and talk to. And as you know, you'll never have an experience like this when you purchase from an online retailer.
To my readers who are travelers, put this on your "must-see" list when in Knoxville. To those of you in Knoxville, if you've never been here you need to wake-up and smell the coffee. A fabulous bookstore experience is right under your noses in downtown Knoxville. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.
JUST FINISHED: Rules Of Civility, Amor Towles. A year in the life of young professionals, 1938, New York City. Their lives, their professions, the parties, their dreams, their relationships, and the struggle to run with the in crowd. Focuses on the life of a young woman, Katey Kontent. NYC is as much a character in this book as the people. I liked it but if you want to try something by this author, I recommend and thoroughly enjoyed The Lincoln Highway.
CURRENTLY READING: Dakota, Martha Grimes.
RECENTLY PURCHASED: Traces, Patricia L. Hudson. In Memoriam, Alice Winn. God, Grace, And Horses, Laurie M. Brock.
