Not only had I never been to Nashville, IN, I'd never even heard of it.  Nashville, TN, yes, Nashville, IN, no.  After visiting here, this seems to be a well-kept secret (at least to me) and I can see why it is such an attraction for tourists.  Historical buildings, lots of small businesses, and a thriving artists colony that has been here for many years.  And speaking of thriving, that's exactly what I found in Fallen Leaf Books, a mainstay in the business community for this small town.  As owner Carey S. told me, this is a tourist attraction for all the art galleries and the bookstore is especially busy during the fall season.  But on this summer day, it looked like a bustling throng of tourists with me included.

Fallen Leaf began business here 8 years ago after Carey purchased the business previously know as the Book Loft (prior to 1989, it was located on the 2nd floor of another building).  So all told, this bookstore can trace its roots back 33+ years in Nashville.  And Carey can trace his bookstore roots all the way back to Montclair, NJ and is now happily sharing his book knowledge and talents with tourists and locals alike.  Don't ever let this store go, Nashville.

This small, one-level shop is located in the near downtown, and very convenient for foot traffic.  They offer new and used books and all the used books are on an inventory so they know what they have.  They also have a good number of vintage and collectible editions which are selling well, available online or in-person.  There aren't many sidelines but they do stock puzzles (they've sold well), touristy post cards, and locally created greeting cards to name a few.

Carey and store manager Taylor were wonderful to meet and I could've talked books with them all day.  I was really happy to hear that Fallen Leaf did especially well during the shutdown, something that I've been surprised to hear repeatedly from other indies.  I should never doubt the devotion of loyal independent bookstore customers.  

If you're reading this and just finding out about Nashville, IN, it's no longer a secret.  Set your summer vacation GPS for Fallen Leaf and enjoy a super bookstore experience with the awesome people who work there.  Go to an indie and buy a book.  Bonsoir.
