Breck Books - Breckenridge, CO

Breck Books, Breckenridge, CO

By all accounts, an independent bookstore in Breckenridge, CO would seem to be a no-brainer.  A resort town popular with winter and summer tourists.  A great location on the upper level of Towne Square Mall in the heart of town surrounded by lots of independent small businesses.  But typically indies need to be embraced by the local community to enjoy sustained success.  Breckenridge has an approximate population of 3-4000.  It's an affluent, educated community easily able to support a bookstore.  But since this bookstore is only 10 months old, I'll give the local population the benefit of the doubt because they may not know about it yet.  Citizens of Breckenridge, now is the time to come to the aid of your new independent bookstore!  This beautiful store along with their fine owners deserve your support.  You know, buy local, shop local.  Or poof...

This one-level, smallish indie offers all new books along with a good variety of sidelines.  If you are a cribbage player, they offer locally wood-crafted boards that are true works of art.  The Breck Books store also includes greeting cards (including some saucy-themed adult cards), popular games like Cards Against Muggles, Game Of Thrones Monopoly, and several literary themed items.  As co-owner Richard S. told me, they're still trying to get a feel in their first year for the store's business baseline since they have nothing to compare it to previously.  But he also told me, so far so good and as his wife and co-owner Kim told me, they're sustaining.

The store has hosted a few author signings and are toying with the idea of a game night (get it? "toying" with a game night??!  Come on people, work with me here!).  All these things will come in time as Richard and Kim find their way through the store's first year.  One of my favorite things here is something that just can't be duplicated elsewhere.  A large picture window with two large chairs looking out to the mountains.  This would be my reading spot.

The best news of all is that thankfully, this baby bookstore has two terrific parents.  Richard has many years of experience owning and working in bookstores and Kim is a huge book person.  They're knowledgeable and most importantly they're darn nice people.  So Breckenridge, you need to find out what all the tourists have already discovered.  A terrific local bookstore in the heart of a picturesque town.  Go to an indie and buy a book.  Bonsoir.

JUST FINISHED:  The Reckoning, John Grisham.  A WWII vet living with his family on a Mississippi farm decides to calmly go into town and murder the Methodist minister in cold blood.  He has no excuse or defense and only says he had his reasons.  Do we ever find out why or does he take his secret to the grave?  Or are there additional family secrets waiting to be uncovered?  This book also spends a large portion detailing the brutal conditions of the Bataan Death March.  I like Grisham and I enjoyed this book.  Recommended.

CURRENTLY READING:  The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt.

RECENTLY PURCHASED:  The River, Peter Heller.

Just outside the front entrance.  Before you enter the store, feast your eyes on this view.

Great display just to the right after entering.

Mixture of genres shelved near the front of the store.

View from the chairs in front of the large storefront window.  I can just imagine sitting here with a book and watching the snow fall.

This is the primo seating spot in the store in front of the window pictured above.  Dedicated readers may recognize the celebrity seated in this perfect spot.  Yes, that's my mom.

Just a few of the items offered of local and regional interest.

This store offers many relevant local and regional genres.

Follow this aisle to the young adult section.

A few of the greeting cards available.

Both of these games are good sellers.

I love these.  Literary candles, carried by many independent bookstores.

A sampling of some of the sidelines.

A variety of jigsaw puzzles.

If you're a cribbage player looking for a unique board, here you go.  These are locally made and are absolutely beautiful.

Another great place in the store to sit and enjoy a book.

The store has some unique greeting cards.

Partial view of the children's section.

Overview of the store looking from the back toward the front entrance.

A very popular game that is hard to keep in stock.

With Richard on the left and Kim in the middle, the two fine co-owners at Breck Books.  Thanks for a great visit.
