The Paperback Shack, Niles, OH |
Family, love, life. I don't know if any bookstore has resonated any more with its owner than this one. There are so many connections for owner Lisa D., that are much larger than The Paperback Shack in Niles, OH. Lisa has owned this store for 3 years but the bookstore has been here for 40 years. Lisa's association with this store goes way back before the 3 years she's owned it. She started visiting this store with her grandpa who would bring her here every Thursday. Fast forward to a day 3-4 years ago when her father visited the store and found out it was for sale. Long story short, Lisa bought the business and lived happily ever after, end of story, right? Wrong. Readers, did you forget the love connection I mentioned? Lisa met her fiancé in the store. Game, set, MATCH! But readers, this story is far from over. Lisa has a vision of bigger and better things and I think she has the right ideas. And to think it all started with a grandpa who introduced her to this bookstore. Thanks grandpa!
This one-level store is small in stature but it packs a punch. The Paperback Shack is a 4-aisle, neatly arranged store offering all used books, mostly fiction. Romance fans will fall in "love" and "drool" over the extensive inventory of this genre. And don't be mislead by the name of the store because you actually can buy hardbacks here. They haven't sold too well yet though to a customer base that is accustomed to paperbacks. As Lisa told me, customer comments include, "it hurts my wrist," and, "I read in bed and when I fall asleep it falls on may face!" The store is well-maintained and Lisa is particular about the books she takes. There's no musty book smell in this store. Other than candles, there are no sidelines here but that's something Lisa is hoping to expand at some point. Events include sidewalk sales (consider a romance novel!) and writer's classes.
This is a wonderful store to browse in and you'll definitely enjoy talking to Lisa who is as nice as they come. Keep your eyes and ears open for the date of the 40th anniversary party this summer of 2018. But don't wait until then to visit this terrific indie with one of my favorite names, The Paperback Shack. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.
