Readers, when you visit Everybody's Bookstore in Rapid City I would encourage you to wear a life vest or maybe a pair of water wings. You'll encounter few waves, the waters will be calm, but you will most definitely be awash in a sea of books. This is the kind of bookstore you can sink your teeth into. When you enter this store your eyes will bug out as you try to decide where to begin. True bookstore junkies will love this place. My suggestion? Dive right in and enjoy the swim, floating in a beautiful sea of 40,000 books.
Everybody's Bookstore is a one-level store offering all used books, bursting at the seams. It's situated perfectly between a residential area and a retail area. It's also in near proximity to several schools. This is super for local foot traffic but since I'm not foot traffic, I alway enjoy it when I can find a spacious, free parking lot right by the store. Lorie S., the owner, has had this business for 23 years, 20 years in its current location. A great run for any independent bookstore and it couldn't have been done without a great combination of devoted regular customers and tourists.
Lorie offers store credit to customers who bring in their good used books. This store is mostly about the books, but they do a good business selling maps. I would strongly encourage tourists to visit here and get maps for much of the regional landscape, everything from hiking maps to conventional road maps. Everybody's Books also has an online presence that has been very beneficial for their business. Check out their web site and their sites on various social media.
Lorie is a pro at the bookstore business. Anyone with a 20+ year run in this industry deserves any recognition they can get. She was terrific to meet and talk to and you'll enjoy talking to her about books and authors. She doesn't have the books on a database but she knows what she has and where to find it, just like all the other good booksellers I've met. I think that's pretty impressive in a sea of books!
So dive right in, readers. Enjoy a sea where you won't get sunburned or see any sharks. You'll be surrounded by the friendliest of entities, a sea of books. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.
JUST FINISHED: I Am I Am I Am, Maggie O'Farrell. Author's memoir detailing her seventeen brushes with death. Includes health struggles she's overcome as well as health struggles of her daughter. I liked it.
