Readers, aside from black and gold (go Hawks!), one of my favorite colors is purple. Imagine my thoughts when I walked into a purple bookstore. Regular readers know I can exaggerate, so no, Fiction Addiction is not totally purple but tastefully purple. Everything from the trim on the inside of the store, to the employee shirts, to the infant onesies, to the bag I left with. But after you get done enjoying the purple haze, then you can get down to the business of books. Is it any coincidence that the legendary Jimi Hendrix performed "Purple Haze," while legendary bookstore owner Jill Hendrix works in a purple haze? Interesting. I think there's a novel in there somewhere.
But enough of the claptrap, you need to hear about this great place. Jill has been in business with Fiction Addiction for almost 14 years. They have been in their new location, Shops By The Mall, for about 3 years. One of the challenges after moving is getting the regulars to return and find the new store, but otherwise it is a great location. The one-level store is very active with author events both in the store and off-site. Much of the book shelves and displays are on wheels so they can clear out a good space to seat 60+ customers for these events. There are a few sidelines here but Jill continues to look for just the right ones that will bring in business. One of the better ones is called a pyramid, a pyramid shaped pillow-like item to hold your book or ereader. Another sideline they're just beginning to offer is self-publishing services. Jill is optimistic that this will take hold and help expand the store profit.
It was so great to meet Jill and visit with her about the store. And it was great to walk in and the first thing she said was, "Are you Bob?" Doug at
The Eagle Eye Bookshop had tipped her off about my visit. Clearly, she's done a great job here. Like any good bookseller, within 5 minutes she was asking about what I read and what I like. She very quickly matched me with book options that she thought would fit me. This is what good booksellers do. They also have some great staff displays and in the case of Fiction Addiction, a great children's' room.
Ok, admit it, since you started reading this some of you have had the song "Purple Haze" in your heads. Now when you hear "Purple Haze," you can also think of Fiction Addiction. Embrace the purple and visit the other legendary Hendrix. Don't miss out on this great bookstore. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.
