The Book Nook - Canby, OR

The Book Nook, Canby, OR

Most indie owners I meet are very intuitive, perfectly in-step with their community, tuned into the present as well as the future.  This describes Book Nook owner Megan W. perfectly.  Her bookstore is now 6 years old, in its 3rd location and clearly this present location is the best on the corner of the major downtown intersection, or as I call it, ground zero.  This has been the perfect move from a store of 300 square feet to this expansive, one-level space.  Smart move.  And her intuition tells her that Canby, population approximately 18,000 and growing, will begin a downtown revitalization that will lead the bookstore into a successful future that is already showing signs of positive growth for the business.  As I told her, there’s no doubt for me that Megan and The Book Nook will continue to grow as beloved members of this community.

This beautifully designed space offers new and used books and various sidelines.  The store is VERY picky about the books they accept from customers but do offer trade for store credit.  What I really like is that Megan has all the used books listed on a data base, something not always possible at other bookstores.  They also have a small collection of vintage and collectible books, a portion of the business that may expand in time.  Keep in mind that if you can’t visit the store in person consider ordering online through a link on their website.

Yes, the stickers are hot here (just like the frickin’ temperatures.  Which compels me to say the air conditioning here is outstanding.).  But so are mushrooms, gnomes, and dragons.  Other sidelines include greeting cards, games, journals, and much more.  The store has a very flexible space with many of the books shelved on rolling carts which really opens up the middle of the store for events.

One of the popular events here is the store book club consisting of 15 members.  If you’re in the Canby area, you might want to consider checking this out.  Last month they enjoyed their club meeting by celebrating a birthday with champagne and cupcakes!  YES PLEASE!  Books, champagne, cupcakes, in a book club of kindred spirits, and an owner with an eye on the future.  Well done.  Go to an indie and buy a book.  Bonsoir.

JUST FINISHED:  The Night Always Comes, Willy Vlautin.  I just discovered this Oregon author and he deserves more national attention.  Lynette is the main character, a young single woman living with her mother and developmentally disabled brother and she is exhausted.  Working low paying jobs, trying to save enough to buy their house and always caring for her brother.  The meager income forces her to prostitute herself which advances her spiral into darkness and depression.  Can she overcome the many obstacles?  This book was excellent.  Recommended.

CURRENTLY READING:  Shuggie Bain, Douglas Stuart.

RECENTLY PURCHASED:  The House Across The Lake, Riley Sager.

This is one side of the bookstore.  Go around the corner to the left to enter.

An excellent corner location.  Enter at the doors to the left.

Lots of space in the display window.

Start the browsing before you enter.  This is like baiting the hook for a reader.  Many bookstores do this.

View looking into the store from the front entrance.

The books along the left wall after entering.

Just a few of the recent releases offered.

Continue into the store from the entrance and look to the right for this beautiful view.

Table display of various sidelines.

I wonder where we should check out?!  Notice the assortment of impulse sideline buys around the check out counter.

Yes, they have stickers.

Well, and who could resist these?

Locally sourced and unique earrings.

Pick your destination by the book you choose.  Very creative.

One of the several book aisles.

Very attractive wall display with new and popular releases.

I always love it when I can get a picture like this.

How appropriate that the recent Bookstore Romance Day included the popular blind date with a book promotion.

Overview of the children's area.

I think kids will enjoy this area.

Another angle of the children's area including tiny chairs for tiny customers.

A cross view of the store.

Two perfect seats to start a book.

Find something here to go with a children's book.

Are there any chess players in Canby?  Come to The Book Nook and play a match.

ALWAYS ask your bookstore about a gift card or gift certificate.

These are only a few of the games available.

It's always fun to see the individual and creative ways bookstores are decorated.

With Megan, the fine owner at The Book Nook.  Thanks for a great visit.
