As I travel the country I continue to marvel at my good fortune of seeing wonderful bookstores but also meeting people who are simply the best. And I'm aware that I mention this quite often. Franklin, IN already knows what a terrific person they have at Wild Geese Books. Considering she just gave birth to a spanking new bookstore that is only one month old, she's doing exceedingly well!

Tiffany P., the owner of Wild Geese, opened the doors one month ago on November 1. This one-month old baby is very mature for its age. It already walks, talks, shaves, and eats solid food. In other words, you can already check off many things that all the long-running successful indies do. Tiffany offers unique greeting cards, a line of Shinola journals, a variety of book-themed sidelines, wrapping paper for those gifts, socks, and much more. In the store's one month life, they've already hosted a book club and an open mic night. Her husband, an English professor at Franklin College, has held a class here. The recent small business Saturday was a huge success. There is great optimism for this endeavor since Franklin needed a bookstore and the community's support for small business is excellent. Tiffany has done her homework and it shows. This store opened at a sprint and has been picking up speed ever since.

I like to say that dynamite comes in small packages but that just doesn't seem to fit here. Cozy, comfy, and very attractive does fit. It's a small-sized store offering all new books and a variety of sidelines. The store is drawing enthusiastic customers from Franklin, but also visitors from other towns like Whiteland, for example. The fact that this store just opened is so encouraging to those who support and patronize independent bookstore. Kudos to Tiffany and her vision for the community.

I had a great time meeting Tiffany and visiting this wonderful store. But I want to give a word of caution to the Franklin community. You have a remarkable new bookstore and a great person running it. It's fun to have this newness, but that will fade and that's where your continued support must endure. Don't let this marvelous bookstore slip from your hands. You're lucky. Many towns much larger have nothing. Support this place with your participation and patronage. I guarantee this support will be returned to you in the enjoyment of having something that is part of our country's culture. If you haven't been here yet, now is the time. Pay a visit to the Wild Geese Bookshop, take a friend, and then come back again, it's super. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.

JUST FINISHED: Old Age, A Beginner's Guide, Michael Kinsley. Author talks about his diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and the challenges it poses for him. Somewhat repetitious, somewhat of a downer, and not the least bit helpful as a beginner's guide to old age. Blah. The best thing about this book is the title (misleading) and it's short.
