Spoonbill & Sugartown Books - Brooklyn, NY

This is my third visit to NYC in search of independent bookstores.  Even though this area has had a lot of stores close over the years, there are still many great ones to visit.  Booksellers and owners are always telling me about other stores to visit and I knew Spoonbill & Sugartown would be a good one because I heard about it from several other bookstores.  Could there be any higher recommendation than one that comes from one's own peers?  I'm happy to say they were right.  A nice indie with nice people to meet and visit.

Spoonbill & Sugartown has a great location on Bedford Ave in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.  The store is very visible and has great foot traffic, especially with tourists which is a huge part of their business.  The one-level store has new and used books, acquiring their used books from individual customers or larger sales.  The used books aren't entered into the store's data base but always ask them about what you're looking for.  Booksellers have great minds for knowing what's on their shelves.  They've been around for about 17 years now and have opened a 2nd store in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn.  I especially like that this store carries translations and small press books (in addition to new main stream fiction), those things that you don't always find everywhere.  They also have a good number of art and art related books and for those with an interest in that genre I would encourage you to visit here.  Besides their books, they offer a small variety of sidelines including greeting cards, journals and planners, book bags, and a few other miscellaneous items.

I had a great time talking with one of the co-owners, Jonas K., and Susan.  Nice people to visit with and Jonas especially told me a lot about the store and other bookstores in the area.  As with other NYC bookstores, I would advise against driving to this store since driving and parking are a major hassle.  Consider public transportation or other options.  But no matter how you get there, just go!  You'll enjoy seeing one of NYC"s renowned and long-running independent bookstores.  Go to an indie and buy a book.  Bonsoir.
