Rainy Day Books - Fairway, KS
|
On the day I visited Rainy Day Books in Fairway, Kansas it really didn't live up to its name. On the day I visited it could've been called, "Slightly Overcast With Occasional Sprinkles Books." This was probably a good thing. If it had actually been a rainy day it would've been way too tempting to grab one of their great recommendations, get comfy in a chair, and enjoy way too much time in this super little indie in the Kansas City area.
I was here on a Monday morning and things were hopping. Taunda, the manager, was swamped trying to fulfill online orders. The other three staffers were busy helping customers as they came and went as well as all the other upkeep that helps independent bookstores succeed. Upon visiting here there are a fews things that are quite obvious. The store is well maintained and organized. It is extremely active with author visits and readings. This indie is on the small side so many of the author events they host are held at off-site venues, all located near the store. Some of the smaller events are held in the store. Hillary was here recently on her book tour that drew a crowd of 2200. Here in the Kansas City area, Rainy Day Books has a supportive and devoted local following.
The store has all the recent publications, children's books, staff recommendations (although this didn't jump right out at me at first), some boxed sets of greeting cards as well as individual cards. And that's about it. Not much in the way of knick-knack type items.
But as with so many of my visits, the staff here was fantastic in every way. They were all knowledgeable, very conversant, and so fun to talk to. Shout out to Jeri who gave me many great recommendations for things to read. Independent bookstore staffers always make everything sound so good.
When you visit Kansas City take time to visit this cute, quaint indie located in Fairway. Even if you don't know what you're looking for, you'll meet the great group of staffers here at Rainy Day Books who will be happy to share some great reading recommendations. In my experience visiting with these people, you'll find something wonderful to read. Go to an indie and buy a book. Bonsoir.
JUST FINISHED:
The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat, Edward Kelsey Moore. Recommended. The very tight bond between three black women and the unique challenges that each of them face in their lives. Humorous at times and includes ghosts. If nothing else, you've got to love the title. 4 stars.
CURRENTLY READING:
Die Trying, Lee Child. A Jack Reacher novel. Page-turner.
RECENTLY PURCHASED:
The Martian, Andy Weir. Thanks Jeri.
